Metal polishing, or buffing, is often a crucial step in the restoration & custom lighting process. Many metals experience oxidation over time, and buffing is a way to reverse this process.

First, abrasives are applied at high speed to remove surface defects like pitting, nicks, lines and scratches from the lighting fixtures.

Then, various buffing materials are used to smooth the surface. As a general rule, coarse grit abrasives are used first and fine grit abrasives later. This creates a smooth finish by forming very thin lines that are not visible to the naked eye.

To further prevent unwanted oxidization, polished metal surfaces may be coated with a wax, oil or lacquer. This is of particular concern for fixtures made of copper alloys such as brass and bronze.

Materials that may require buffing include but are not limited to:

  • Brass • Bronze • Copper • Silver
  • Iron • Steel • Tin • Many other metals or alloys
