  • Project Overview
Timothy Dwight College at Yale University opened in September of 1935. The college takes its name from two of its former presidents, both named Timothy Dwight. The elder Dwight was Yale's eighth president, serving from 1795 through 1817. His grandson and namesake was the twelfth president of the school, between 1886 and 1899.

The building was designed in a Georgian-colonial and federal style, and used fine materials such as Longmeadow brown sandstone, hand-hewn beams, knotty-wood paneling and other fine details that lend themselves to the ambiance of Old Campus. Known for his commissioned academic works, the designer James Gamble Rogers did extensive work at Yale. His other work includes Saybrook College, Trumbull College, Berkeley College, the Hall of Graduate Studies and more. He was also commissioned to work at Columbia and North Western Universities.

Located in an area of New Haven renowned for essentially being an outdoor museum of architecture, it was imperative that any custom lighting project be performed with these considerations. Grand Light's custom chandelier for the college was built accordingly. Although the fixture was rewired and constructed to meet modern requirements and specifications, the chandelier also has to fit in with existing fixtures, the architecture and decor of the college. The eight foot iron chandelier was crafted using an iron band to hold the nineteen up-lights, each of which have glass shades that were custom made by Grand Light's glass blowers.
